The Not So Secret Origin of Bullzerk

Bullzerk actually predates Cowman by more than 10 years, I was 13 or 14 at the time and this is what he looked like.

Pretty bad, huh?  I know.  I know.  Here's the deal.  One of the first characters I ever created was a superhero named Fireball...I don't know how old I was at the time but I'm sure I was barely in Elementary school.  The character was a composite of a few different things and wasn't terribly original.  Then a few years later I decided I was gonna try to revamp him and make him into something cool.  I'm not sure I succeeded but there was definitely an improvement and Bullzerk became a member of his rogues gallery.  The drawing above was the first incarnation of him.  Then came this...

I think the storyline was that he was on steroids or something.  I bulked him up, made him darker and gave him a cigar to chomp on.  It's hard to believe I used to get compliments on drawings like these, they make me cringe now.  His proportions are purposefully exaggerated but they still don't work.  Gah.

And then there was Cowman....
I really doubt I'll ever bring back Fireball...not without a massive overhaul anyway...but I always thought Bullzerk was kinda neat looking and he made sense as a Cowman villain so I resurrected him into the slightly more cartoony, better proportioned individual you see here.  Bullzerk's Fireball origin was essentially a rip off of the Lizard from Spider-Man...something to do with experiments on bovine DNA.  Bad, right?  Which is why I make a point of being sketchy about his origin in Cowman...I figured I now had a chance to poke fun at the situation.  Who knows, maybe one day I'll write a decent backstory for him and reveal it in a Cowman adventure.  But for right now he's just a cool looking character with not a lot of story.

Cowman Production Art!

Here're some drawings from when I was gearing up to make that original Cowman cartoon.

You can see Cowman didn't change a whole lot but the differences are definitely noticeable, the squinty eyes make him look a lot more thoughtful...though not necessarily smart.  His chin isn't as defined and his nose isn't quite as pug...he's actually a much more heroic looking character in this incarnation.  And he doesn't have hoof shoes...I like the hoof shoes I'm glad I added them.  The girls are pretty incidental...I was still playing with story ideas when I drew these and I was gonna make more of a point out of the girls swooning all over him, but the idea eventually devolved into some Cowman cheerleaders in the background.  These girl drawings aren't particularly good, I wanted to really over exaggerate them and almost make a joke out of their hair and boobs being so ridiculous, I didn't really explore the idea too far, not sure it would've worked.

Here's the uncoloured version of what ultimately ended up in that cartoon.  He's much more defined here and you can see I defined him even further for the comic.  You also won't see girls like this hanging around him in the comic too often either, I thought it was a lot funnier to make him kind of a dork.
Soon I'll post some early artwork of Bullzerk, believe it or not that character actually predates Cowman by at least 10 years.

The Adventures of Cowman!!

Cowman started as a one off joke...I got the idea while I was walking my dog and crossed the street behind someone in a cowboy hat...within seconds I had a comedy routine worked out in my head about how there are no cowmen, only cowboys...within another couple of seconds I realized how horrible said 'comedy' bit really was but then it seemed like a pretty good name for a superhero.  So I made this cartoon...with barely any actual animation at all, meant to be a cartoony version of the early Marvel animated series, back in the 60's when the Hulk was ever lovin.'

Since it was only intended to be a one off I really didn't care if it made any sense at all...I just wanted it to be funny and really pushed myself to make even the stand alone drawings as funny as I could, which I soon realized was something I should push myself to do more often, and I like to think I have in the years since.  As pointless and ridiculous as the whole idea was I fell in love with the character and couldn't help thinking of actual adventures and mundane situations to send him out for the passed year, whenever I needed a break from "The Case of the Midnight Murderer," another project that's been eating most of my time, I drew new Cowman adventures, and finally I'm ready to start sharing them.  The plan's to post twice a week, Tuesdays and Thursday...if I miss a day or two now and then cut me some slack folks, I'm only one man.  I'll also be posting some concept art and other cool stuff  here and there related to the comic.  For starters, here's the original Cowman cartoon that started it all!
